The Power of “I Am”

Story time.  It’s short.

In my career history I managed a senior home care franchise office and we had a business advisor that was hired by Head Office.  This fellow, when asked, “How are you?” had an interesting, standard answer.

He would always reply, “I am, in fact, unbelievable!” Of course he was intending this to come across as a positive statement, that ‘life was great’ for him and he was ‘amazing’.

But…. it always struck me as an odd declaration to make, and consequentially, I had a hard time accepting his advice because he was, after all “in fact, unbelievable”!

That was a bit of (intended) humour to warm us up to the subject of Affirmations or Declarations.

Scads of people say they have tried affirmations only to become frustrated that they didn’t work and they give it up.

If you’re one of those peeps, then you will want to read the rest of this blog post.

As you likely know, affirmations are statements of intent that focus your attention and your energy on the experience you want. (FYI, a side benefit is that they also improve your self-esteem too! That is, providing their done correctly!!!!!! Read on.)

You may also already know that the power of the words I Am is irrefutable from a theological standpoint.  Essentially I Am is another name for The Almighty God in the Christian Bible.

From an affirmations standpoint, starting your declaration with I am is absolutely essential to the impetus of manifesting what you want.

  • I am connects you with the power of divinity.

  • I am puts whatever statement you’re making into a present and positive tense.

Many people mistakenly start their statements with “I want…” because that is the truth.  When doing that, your statement is then positioned as something that does not already exist – which also means you are declaring a state of lacking what you want.

From a Law of Attraction perspective, thinking and speaking in lack language is a no-no!  You will actually continue to attract the lack of what it is that you actually want.

Some people find it hard to use I am in statements for things which they “want”, because it feels like a stretch (or even a lie) to make a declaration about something as though it already exists in their life, when it doesn’t.

Here’s a really generic example that I think everyone will be able to wrap their head around:

Let’s say you “want” to be healthier than you are.  It would likely feel uncomfortable for you to make the statement “I am healthy”, because you don’t truly feel that way.

So if the straight up I am statement is tripping you up, then try doing the following little tweak to your affirmation declarations:

Say “I am in the process of  becoming healthy.”  This anchors the statement into a positive action - am in the process –rather than a negative action of want (and lacking) and feels more credible or believable than “I am healthy”.

So here’s an easy-peasey blueprint to use for your affirmations:
  • your affirmation must be in present tense, using the words I am
  • your affirmation must feel good.  It’s got to elicit a positive emotion from you - you know, make you feel a little lighter or, if it’s a biggie, make you feel tingly when you say it!

Most Law of Attraction Coaches advise that affirmations are best declared out loud, in front of a mirror with conviction, twice a day as often as possible.

You can shorten the time it takes to do that with my other little tweak.

Here’s a pic of one of my more recent affirmation sheets.

I picked attributes that I either already possess, or was working on achieving, or increasing.

I posted it on my bathroom wall and after my shower and/or just before bed I’d recite  the 3 central statement (one of which is actually the meaning of my name). Then I’d say the I am  part just once, and happily go through the checklist! But I used conviction and gusto.

I can honestly say that pretty much everything on my list has improved - some things majorly and some more subtly.

So, I hope this helps you get excited about using affirmations to draw forth what you want.  Let me know!

And whatever you do, remember to Be FLAWSOME…. Accept Your Flaws. Still Feel  Awesome!
